Ebola: the most severe epidemic in DRC history

France's top diplomat, Jean-Noël Barrot, pleaded Saturday for strengthened support for the response to the most severe Ebola epidemic in DRC history. He arrived Saturday October 3 in Ituri province, presented as the epicenter of the epidemic.

Why it matters

This is the most severe Ebola epidemic ever recorded in DRC, and the visit of a French minister calls for increased international effort.

Missing medical plane: debris found

Debris was found after the disappearance of a Canadian-registered ambulance plane that was flying from Bermuda to Boston, with six people on board. Flight data shows the aircraft lost altitude after ceasing to communicate with air traffic control. Air traffic control audio recordings indicate it may have flown "blind" due to electrical problems, with a storm ahead of it.

Why it matters

The debris found leaves little hope for the six occupants and opens an investigation into the causes of the accident.

Rare tornado in an Australian town

A tornado swept through the small town of Ulladulla in New South Wales, felling trees and signs and tearing off roofs. Two houses became uninhabitable, but no one was injured according to residents. Storms and heavy rain affected much of eastern and southern Australia.

Why it matters

The phenomenon is rare and damage is significant, but the absence of injuries limits the severity of the event.

Brazil: Lula and Flavio Bolsonaro neck and neck

Brazilians vote Sunday in the first round of the presidential election. Left-wing President Lula, 80, is seeking a fourth non-consecutive term against Flavio Bolsonaro. Latest polls show a narrowing gap, and no candidate is expected to win in the first round. A second round is scheduled for October 25.

Why it matters

The election pits two visions for Latin America's largest economy, in a climate where the question of American interference weighs on the campaign.

02

Ethiopia: army enters Mekele, capital of Tigray

Ethiopian federal troops entered Saturday in Mekele, capital of the Tigray regional state, largely abandoned earlier by rebel forces. Fighting broke out on September 23 when the Tigray People's Liberation Front launched attacks toward neighboring states.

Why it matters

The capture of the Tigray capital marks a turning point in the offensive and revives fears of a return to devastating war.

Targeting Kiev bridges is a first since the start of the war and aims to push residents to leave the city.

Yemen: Houthis say they targeted Aramco in Riyadh

Yemeni Houthis claim to have targeted Saturday a site of oil giant Aramco in Riyadh, from which flames rose. They blame the Saudi military for 26 air raids on Sanaa. The spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition calls these claims "misleading". The Riyadh-backed Yemeni army says it killed 700 Houthis in 24 hours.

Hostilities between Houthis and Saudi Arabia have resumed since July and target energy infrastructure.

Bosnia: general elections under tension

Bosnian voters vote Sunday in a country still deeply divided between Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats. Confidence in parties is eroding, their promises remaining vague.

Flydubai: copilot wanted to commit a "terrorist act"

The investigation established that the Omani copilot of the Dubai-Tel Aviv flight used the cockpit emergency axe to attack the pilot, and speaks of a "terrorist act". The UAE Attorney General confirmed the attempt. Oman Air had banned him from flying for his "radical ideological opinions". Australian authorities are investigating his links to Australia.

Why it matters

The investigation officially qualifies the attack as a terrorist act, and the case extends to checks in Australia.

He estimates that Australia should avoid recession, and points to pressure from the Middle East conflict. The Reserve Bank just raised its rates.

Why it matters

Rising rates and budget pressure are weighing on Australian households.
